About the GT Conservation District
What Exactly Is a Conservation District?
Conservation Districts are local units of state government, set up generally on a county-by-county basis. Districts were originally created to deal with the catastrophic soil erosion of the "Dust Bowl." Since then, Conservation Districts have diversified greatly, each tailoring programs to the natural resource needs in their particular county.
Though Districts are local units of state government, they are not funded by state dollars alone. Districts must compete for funds from other public and private sources, charge for some services, and establish partnerships with local entities and individuals to achieve mutual goals and to provide needed services. Visit the "Programs & Services" page to learn more about our collaborative approach to resource management:

Our Board
The Conservation District board is made up of five locally elected directors as required by state statute. The directors are elected at the District's annual meeting and serve four-year terms.
Responsibilities of the Board include the oversight of fiduciary activities of the District, attending board meetings and providing guidance to the executive director as needed, being a positive advocate for the District, and participating in fundraising activities in any number of ways that a director may choose.
