The Watershed

The 287-square-mile Boardman River Watershed is located in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties in northwest Lower Michigan, and is one of the major drainage basins within the 973-square-mile Grand Traverse Bay Watershed. The Boardman River’s main tributaries begin some 40 miles east of Traverse City, where ground water rises in the Mahan swamp, then flows southwesterly through many miles of forested lands until the mainstream turns northward about nine miles south of Traverse City. The river discharges into Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City!
