H- Sugar Maple

Scientific Name: Acer saccharum
Height: 60-80'
Width: 40-70'
Growth Rate: 6-12 inches per year
Habitat: Sand, loam, well drained. Full sun to partial shade.
Spacing: 15' x 15' to 20' x 20'

Sugar Maple is a native species whose fall colors make it ideal for parks or broad lawns. Shade tolerance allows it to be planted among older trees. It is sensitive to road salt, heat, compaction, and drought. Its fall colors range from brilliant yellow to orange to red. The Sugar Maple is the principle source of maple syrup. It is also the most common tree in the northern forest. It can be used in riparian buffers on streambanks, upper shorelines and upland buffers.
