New England Aster

Scientific Name: Aster novae-angliae
Height: 3-5 feet
Habitat: Prefers moist soil, full sun, sandy soil
Spacing: 10-12 inches

New England Aster is a native species that tolerates poor soil and dryness, but will bloom poorly in dry soil. They also will tolerate excess moisture longer than other species. The plant has simple narrow leaves that are dark green and hairy. The blossoms have 1-2 inch purple rays and a yellow disc center. It is a very showy plant that is good for cut flowers and its nectar attracts butterflies.
