Mountain Mint

Scientific Name: Pycnanthemum virginianum
Height: 1-2 feet
Habitat: Full or partial sun, any soils, moist to dry conditions
Spacing: 18-24 inches

Mountain Mint is an aromatic wildflower that grows from slender rhizomes (underground stems that root from the nodes). Plants are usually branched on the upper half. Lance-shaped leaves are 1-2 inches long and usually smooth. Flowers are arranged in tight clusters at the top of the plant.The 1/2 inch long flowers are whitish or pale lavender and the plant is very fragrant. It blooms in July and August. This is a good plant for herb gardens and is a nectar source for butterflies. Mountain Mint is a clumping plant and does not tend to spread much.
