The beautiful fall leaves are at their peak color at the Boardman River Nature Center. The 16 preschool children who came out from the Discovery Head Start Program had a great time collecting leaves and seeds. As they hiked, they learned a little about some of our native trees and shrubs along the Sabin Pond Trail. Some of those included:
- Gorgeous red leaves from the Red Maple
- Beautiful golden leaves from the Quaking Aspen and the Ironwood
- Still-green leaves and acorns from the Red Oak
- Red leaves and red berries from the Staghorn Sumac
- Yellow and brown leaves from the American Beech
- Needles from a conifer, the Red Pine
After the hike, the boys and girls divided into small groups and toured the Nature Center Gallery, intent on seeing and touching study skins and skulls of animals that are native to our area. The rain held off and the sun came out to make it a truly spectacular day for a leaf hunt!
