On Saturday, August 22nd, several volunteers from the Traverse City based Adams Chapter of Trout Unlimited came out to restore the banks of Kids Creek behind the former Grand Traverse Auto, now Fox Motors. Three tons of stone and eight tons of topsoil were brought in to restore 65 feet of the Creek. The District, in partnership with The Watershed Center, was able to stabilize the eroding banks through a state grant from the MDEQ. Completion of this project and six associated sites restored late last year, is estimated to eliminate 10 tons of sediment annually that was entering the Creek.

The result of this work will also improve trout habitat through the installation of “lunker” structures and strategically placed woody cover. Lunker structures simulate an undercut streambank providing the habitat that trout favor. Earlier this summer, Rotary conducted a “Sign-up & Show-up” work bee to restore another erosion site on Kids Creek near Great Wolf Lodge on Garfield Township property. Thanks to all involved for their help in improving the quality of our rivers and streams! For more information contact Steve Largent at 883-9960.
