Thanks to over fifty ninth and eleventh grade students from Grand Traverse Academy, the trails at Grand Traverse Commons have been resurfaced with a healthy layer of wood chips; thus protecting the area from erosion and making it a much better place to go hiking. The entire group of high schoolers and adults worked diligently hauling and spreading wood chips on three portions of the trail behind the Greenspire School. Accompanied by several teachers, school advisors, and Grand Traverse Conservation District Public Land Management staff and AmeriCorps volunteer; teams of students worked to transport wood chips by the wheelbarrow-full and bucketful. The trails were a-blur with movement as the students, teachers, other school staff, and volunteers all busily worked together to finish--extending up through the field, over the creek, and up several hills to improve this stretch of the trail system. Several bags of litter were also collected in an effort to beautify the area and make it safer for wildlife. This work bee was part of a Community Service Day that the school participates in each year. The GTCD greatly appreciates the dedicated community service that the entire Grand Traverse Academy group provided, and we hope that they enjoyed themselves and will return to the Commons to enjoy their trail!
