Over 100 second grade students from Charlevoix Elementary School came to the Boardman River Nature Center for a water hike and a tour of the building. Before the hike, Molly McCombs reviewed the water cycle, and then the kids broke up into smaller groups to hike the Sabin Pond and Fox Den Trails. The students learned that the Boardman River was the conduit for bringing logs to Traverse City to the mills during the logging era. They learned that other uses for the river are recreation, hydroelectric power, and habitat for animals. It was a beautiful day for a hike, and afterwards, the kids ate a picnic lunch in the pavilion and then toured the Nature Center. They were able to see mounts, study skins and skulls of many of the native animals in the Boardman River Watershed. The kids were able to make a tree cookie medallion to take home as a remembrance of their trip. Everyone had a wonderful time and we look forward to seeing them again next year.
