GTA Cub Scouts Hike - July 29
GTA Cub Scouts came to the Natural Education Reserve for a nature hike on Tuesday, July 29th. A brief isolated shower hit just as we started the hike. We quickly entered the Sabin Pond Trail for the shelter of the leaf canopy and avoided getting drenched. The scouts and their siblings and parents saw lots of water birds on Sabin Pond and learned a little about native plants along the way. Knapweed, an invasive species, is in full bloom and quite prevalent in the upland areas of the trail. The group learned that the large rocks and stones along the wooded trail were left by the receding glacier about 10,000 years ago. On the return trip through a stand of red and white pines, the scouts collected red pine cones for use in nature crafts at the Grand Opening of the Boardman River Nature Center on August 16th. It was a perfect evening for a nature hike, and we hope to see the kids back to take part in the Grand Opening events and activities!
