GTCD hosts Natural Resources Day for TC Chambers’ Leadership Grand Traverse Program

Lew Coulter, Rebecca Teahen, and Dan Busby are all Leadership Grand Traverse (LGT) Alumni, a program run by the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce. One thing many LGT Alumni though was missing was a day devoted to discuss our Natural Resources and Agriculture in our region. A few years ago, Doug Lucianni asked if the Grand Traverse Conservation District would like to get involved by chairing and hosting a Natural Resources/Agriculture Day as part of the Program.

Tuesday, May 19, the District hosted the second annual Natural Resources day at the Boardman River Nature Center. The morning included visits to Maple Bay Farms to discuss farmland preservation efforts in the region , Engleridge farms to discuss farmer land stewardship activites, and Acme Park to discuss Shoreline management issues. The afternoon included a tour by Steve Largent at the Kids Creek restoration site by Kohls, and then a discussion of the Boardman River Dams issues at Lone Pine. The group appreciates the information and this day helps our potential future leaders better understand the importance of our Natural Resource and Agriculture to our region.

The GTCD would like to thank the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce for there sponsorship of the June educational programs here at the Boardman River Nature Center.
