Through regular communications with local farmers, the MAEAP (Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program) verification program has helped agricultural producers ensure that they are following environmentally sound practices.
“The MAEAP verification was very important to us, because the entire process enabled us to assure the general public that we are striving to do things correctly while maintaining the land for future generations.”
This commitment to our natural resources is evident in over 35 MAEAP verified farms in the area. The process involves a very thorough assessment of agricultural practices and their environmental risks.
“The road to becoming MAEAP verified can seem a bit overwhelming at first; working with the Conservation District, NRCS, and others has been enjoyable and rewarding,” continues Shooks.
Improved practices on the Shooks’ farm include fuel storage, manure management, record keeping, and pesticide containment.
Shooks Farm was started by Daryl’s grandfather in 1914 and is currently owned by 3 generation farmers Daryl and Bryan Shooks. A generation R.J, Greg and Jon are now working on the farm as well. The farm is 1100 acres and raises 400-450 head of beef cattle and 175 acres of tart and sweet cherries.
