Nature Center Hosts its First Workshop

group3.JPGOn February 20, the GTCD was proud to welcome 20 participants including construction contractors, sub-contractors, architects, builders, engineers, and staff members to their “Going Green Construction Contractors Workshop” at the Boardman River Nature Center. The Nature Center’s doors were opened for the very first of its many workshops and educational programs. Topics covered included the history and need for the Nature Center, basics of and resources on “green” design, building with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF’s), and alternative heating options. Tours of the building were also enjoyed by many. Presenters discussed the importance of incorporating many “green” building techniques along with the challenges that go along with the process. Making decisions which consider the balance between energy-efficient products and appliances and the ecological soundness of materials was also emphasized. We would like to thank AIS Equipment Company who provided lunch for the event and all of the knowledgeable presenters who shared their expertise: Fred Campbell, JML Design; Gary Nealis, Nealis Engineering; Max Strickland, Burkholder Construction; Marc Krakow and Jason Ruelle; GBK Construction; Dan Busby, GTCD; and Rebecca Teahen, GTCD. The innovative design elements will surely serve as a model for “green” construction in the future.

The workshop was, for many, the first introduction to the Nature Center; and soon the Grand Opening will offer the entire community a chance to experience all the facility has to offer. The event will be held on August 16-17, 2008 and will entail a vast array of activities such as music, nature hikes, nature classes and movies, tours, and chances to immerse one’s self in the environmental education displays and Natural Education Reserve. The GTCD hopes that everyone will be able to share in this monumental event-filled weekend
