Regional EnviroThon a Success!

March 14 was an exciting and fun-filled day for four Envirothon teams from Glen Lake High School who traveled to Traverse City's NMC Water Studies Institute to compete in the Regional Envirothon.  Ninth through twelth grade students, along with their team advisor, were able to experience presentations and hands-on learning experiences in the areas of aquatic ecology, wildlife, forestry, soils/geology, sustainable agriculture, energy, and land management.  Local Resource Professionals volunteered their time to present these sessions to the students.   After their knowledge building sessions, the teams completed a test which determined the winner of the Regional Competition.  All four teams also presented their community outreach projects to their fellow Envirothon participants, Envirothon coordinator, team advisor, and the Resource Professionals who had presented earlier that day.

Michigan Envirothon is an exciting statewide program that provides environmental education to high school students and their adult advisors.  The experience involves learning about natural resources, completing a community outreach project, and competing in the two-day statewide natural resources competition.  "Inspiring Environmental Stewardship in High School Students" is the theme that frames the competition this year.  All four teams that competed in Traverse City will be eligible to compete at  the state competition this May.  Congratulations!

Grand Traverse Conservation District, Huron Pines AmeriCorps, Schillinger Forestry, Leelanau Conservation District, The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse Bay Area ISD, Kalkaska Conservation District, City of Traverse City, Great Lakes Renewable Resource Institute, and Michigan Department of Agriculture all provided staff and volunteers to help with the event.
