What a great day for a kids hike! Forty-three kids and their parents gathered at the Oleson Pavilion today to learn about native reptiles and amphibians from their hike guide, Leslie Mertz. The kids had a fantastic time observing and touching the live snakes, lizards, salamanders, and frogs Leslie brought along. Green frogs, Garter snakes, Five- lined Skink, and box turtles were among the animals to which Leslie introduced the children. After seeing these animals up close, the children grabbed some nets and set out upon the Sabin Pond Trail in search of salamanders, lizards, and snakes. The kids saw turtles sunning on a log in Sabin Pond, some slugs, and a chipmunk. Most of the reptiles and amphibians were hiding from the cold weather but the kids still had a wonderful and exciting time! Thanks Leslie for sharing your time and animals with the children!
