Habitat: It is shade tolerant, however, its best growth is in full or partial sun. Prefers a moist, deep, rich, well drained organic soil, however it does grow on dry, upland sites.

The Northern White Cedar is a Native Species and is the most important food for deer, which can pose a problem in getting this species established. It is often used in windbreaks, but is sensitive to windfall and ice damage.
White Cedar is good for riparian buffers, streambanks and upper shorelines. It is an excellent food source for birds and for cover for birds and mammals in winter.
