S - Flowering Dogwood

Scientific Name: Cornus florida
Height: 15-25 feet
Growth Rate: 12-18 inches/year
Habitat: Full sun to partial shade, sandy, loam or clay soils, prefers moist soils, well to poorly drained
Spacing: 10'

Flowering Dogwood is a native species and is often grown as a landscape tree that provides shade and fall color. It can be planted to shade a patio or in a shrub border for spring and fall color. It grows in sun or shade but prefers afternoon shade. Trees grown in full shade will be less dense and will have fewer flowers and less color. The bright red fruits provide food for many birds. Flowering Dogwood is sensitive to soil compaction.
