Sugaring for Moths: A Nocturnal Adventure

A cool evening did not deter over twenty kids and adults form coming to the Brown Bridge Quiet Area for a hike called “Sugaring for Moths.” Dr. Duke Elsner, noted entomologist and educator, painted his secret recipe of fermented fruit and beer onto the trunks of dozens of trees along the west parking lot trail of Brown Bridge Pond. After dark, the sweet smell on the trees attracted a variety of wildlife. Among the visitors to the sugar mixture were beetles, millipedes, daddy longlegs a tree frog, and several species of moths, hence the name: Sugaring for Moths. The beautiful underwing moths showed up, flashed their orange underwings, and even landed on one of the kids who attended the hike. It was a wonderful nocturnal adventure and we look forward to coming again next year!
