Summer Conservation Intern

Position: Summer Conservation Intern
posted: 03/17/2008

For over 60 years, the Grand Traverse Conservation District has been the trusted resource for nature-related education programs and land management assistance in the Grand Traverse Area. From groundwater protection to forest health and discovery nature hikes, the GTCD continues to provide the link that brings our community closer to the natural world. We nurture nature through three primary program areas: community programs, public land management, and private land services. This summer, you can "answer the call of nature" and join our land management services team! The LMS team restores the Boardman River, manages approximately 3,000 acres of public parkland, and supports the GTCD mission to inspire exploration, appreciation, and conservation of our natural world.

1. Requirements - College juniors or seniors majoring in a natural resource-related field. Recent college graduates seeking more experience will also be considered. Must have own transportation and housing. Preference will be given to those individuals whose curriculum requires they have an internship for graduation. The intern typically begins working in mid-May and finishes in mid-August. Hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

2. Responsibilities - The Conservation Intern will assist the Land Management Team in developing, coordinating, and implementing its’ work plan, including trail maintenance, hands-on construction projects, volunteer coordination, promotional events, and informational display development. The intern will also have the opportunity to lead trail hikes throughout the 3,000+ acres of parkland we manage. The ability to work with little supervision, construction or outdoor maintenance experience, and good writing/communication skills are beneficial.

3. Compensation - The District will provide a stipend of $9.50 per hour for up to 480 hours of employment over the summer.

4. Application Process: Download the form from our website at www.gtcd.org or call the office at 231-941-0960 to receive an application by mail. The on-line application is in a PDF format and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader® which may be downloaded free of charge from the Adobe Web Site.
