Everyone loves to play in the water but did you know there are tiny insects that live in ponds, rivers, and streams? Well today’s hike was all about the amazing things you can find in ponds! Marc Schollett, who has a master’s degree in Freshwater Ecology, was our hike guide. The kids had a great time experiencing new and exciting aspects of Sabin Pond. Marc explained the ecology of ponds while wading around in the water collecting muck, insects, and algae to show the children. The children got to see and collect caddisfly homes, clamshells, leeches, damselflies, water striders, Scuds, Isopods, and Copepods! Marc also took the children to a stream and let them see the difference in the two ecosystems. After our hike the children were able to look at the animals they had collected under microscopes and identify them. Thank you Marc for being a great guide and helping the children understand the importance of ponds and rivers. The children had a wonderful time learning about the tiny creatures they had never noticed in the water before. Just think, you have probably walked or swam next to millions of aquatic insects in your lifetime!
