This Hike is for the Birds - June 25

Molly McCombs, a retired teacher and Audubon, led 24 children and parents on a bird hike this morning. The morning started off with the children observing some bird nest models, bird feathers and pictures, and a preserved owl and hawk. Molly took the hikers on a loop around the Fox Den trail in search of birds in their natural habitat. Mallard ducks, Grackles, Cardinals, Indigo Bunting, Song Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat, and Tree Swallows were among some of the birds that the children heard and saw on the hike. Birds only make nests from dead things, so along the hike the children were able to collect materials that birds might use and made their own nests back at the Oleson Pavilion. There were a wide variety of nests and the children had a great time learning about the kinds of birds that would inhabit the nests they made. Thanks for sharing your time and expertise Molly!
