This hike was definitely our most popular this summer, with 42 children and 25 adults that attended! Thanks to Paul Schmude from Schmude Oil for doing a great job teaching the children about the rock cycle, how fossils are formed, how to identify rocks, and the geologic history of our area. After Paul’s introduction to rocks and fossils, the children were each given a bag and set out along the Fox Den Trail to collect their own rocks and fossils. The children filled their bags with as many rocks as they (or their parents) could carry and had Mr. Paul help them identify their rocks. Back at the Oleson Pavilion the children were each given a Petoskey stone to take home and an information sheet on Michigan Fossils. Thanks to everyone who came out for a great day of rocks and earth history. Keep your eyes open next time you are outside… you could be standing on a two million year old fossil!
