What Can You Eat in the Woods? Hike - July 19

What parts of a plant are edible? Are there deadly plants in Michigan? Which plants are high in proteins and fats? How do you identify edible plants throughout the changing seasons? One would have to spend many years in the woods to answer these questions, which is exactly what our hike guide today has done! Mike Heuser has spent hundreds of hours in the woods learning what plants are edible and how to identify those plants. Today he shared some of his expertise with our 18 hikers on a walk around the Sabin Pond and Beaver Pond trails. Mike showed the hikers nuts, ground covers, flowers, trees, and herbaceous plants in the area, explained which parts of the plant are edible during certain seasons, and how to go about preparing the plant parts for eating. Mike also explained how important it is to spend time in the woods getting familiar with what plants look like year round. Many plants that look alike are actually quite different and can be poisonous if eaten. The hikers had a wonderful morning and many were taking notes for future reference! Thanks Mike for sharing your time and knowledge with us today!
