Hikers met at 10:00 on Saturday, May 10th at the Oleson Pavilion for the second installment of the Wings and Things Discovery Hike. Dr. Duke Elsner, GT County Agricultural Agent and entomologist, co-guided the hike, along with Molly McCombs, retired science teacher and Audubon.
Hikers followed the Fox Den Trail through wetlands and along Jack’s Creek. Since it’s been cooler than normal this spring, not many butterflies were flying. Duke opened goldenrod galls to find the flies pupating inside and a praying mantis egg mass was spotted on a utility pole en route. Birds encountered along the way were sparrows, cardinals, chickadees, cowbirds, red-winged blackbirds and a solitary swan.
It was a great day for a hike and to top it all off, morel mushrooms were found along the trail. What a treat for the epicurean enthusiast!
