Woodland School 3-5th Graders Learn About Nocturnal Creatures

What nocturnal animals live in the Boardman River Watershed? What do they eat? What are some of their adaptations? These are some of the questions that   Mrs. Louis’ 3rd, 4th and 5th graders had when they came to the Nature Center for some hands-on activities and a hike. The students met in the classroom of the Nature Center and participated in a bat activity and then a feather activity. Finally they dissected an owl pellet to find the bones of whatever prey the owl had feasted upon. The students were excited to hike the Sabin Pond Trail and learn about some of the nocturnal animals that live there. After the hike everyone returned to the Nature Center for a tour of the gallery, which includes a great display of mounts, study skins, and skulls of native animals of the area. Even though the weather was overcast and misty, it did not dampen the students’ enthusiasm or their desire to discover some of the wonders of nature.
